MARTIAL LAW REGIME, DARKEST TIME

I was not yet born when the Martial law was declared by the former president Ferdinand Marcos in 1972 but the effect of that declaration still stings the country until now. Its been 38 years already and still the bitter taste of the is still present right now. The country has not moved forward. In fact, many corrupt officials who were in position before are still holding vital positions in the government. My grandmother used to tell me stories how great the Philippines was during their president, Ramon Magsaysay, who died in a plane crash. For her, Magsaysay was the best president that the Philippines ever had.

The Martial Law was declared to prevent the uprising of the Filipinos during that time. As I know, there was a civil unrest that time and country was imperil of going to the ground that was why Martial Law was declared. In those years, curfew was strictly implemented and people who were against the government of Marcos was accused of mutiny to the country and were imprisoned in Fort Bonifacio. Martial Law was Marcos' strategy in order to prevent people from challenging his position as president. It was effective but it caused so much for the country. Corruption was rampant and allies were molded. The term Rolex group is a very familiar name called to those who were very close to the former president Ferdinand Marcos. In this group, mostly people who are in the armed forces were solid members of this group, including General Fabian Ver and Fidel Ramos.

Let Martial Law be part and be buried in the past. Let us move forward and hope for change for the coming years of the Aquino administration. It was a painful past that we should try to forget and learned from it. The current situation of the country is still rowing slowly forward but in constant mostion going ahead.
